Cybersecurity sounds like such a formal word, a word that only big corporations need to worry about. But, if you use any device that connects to the internet (and who doesn’t?), you should care about cybersecurity.
In this blog post, we look at how understanding cybersecurity can help you practice protecting online data from unauthorized access or damage and ensuring data is correct, available, and confidential.
The CIA Triad
The three most crucial components of security that make up the CIA Triad are
- Confidentiality – The right people have access to data and the wrong people don’t
- Integrity – Only the right people or processes can change information
- Availability – Information is visible and accessible when needed
Understanding the CIA Triad helps protect data and processes from cyberattacks. And we know that cyberattacks can occur on any digital device, not just computers.
Cyberattacks
A cyberattack is any attempt to gain illegal access to a computer system or device to cause harm. Cyberattacks can target any device that connects to a network or the internet, such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, or routers. They can also come from anywhere, including inside or outside an organization.
The people who perform cyberattacks are called cybercriminals. They can be individuals, groups, organizations, or even governments. They have different motives for launching cyberattacks, but they usually fall into three categories:
- Criminal – Hacking into a bank account and transferring funds
- Political – Influencing or disrupting activities of a government activity, such as an election
- Personal – Aiming to harm or embarrass a someone by posting offensive messages on a personal social media account
Zero Trust
Zero Trust is the best defense against cyberattacks and threats. Zero Trust uses the “trust no one and verify everything” practice, which is extremely important in avoiding a major security breach. Requiring all users to authenticate, authorize, and confirm before accessing system resources helps safeguard data.

A good understanding of cybersecurity helps protect personal and professional data and processes from cyberattacks. Some of the best ways to prevent cyberattacks include:
- Using strong passwords and changing passwords regularly
- Updating software regularly
- Avoiding suspicious links and attachments
- Backing up data regularly
- Using multi-factor authentication or other mitigation strategies
